This company was created in 2001 to develop the Crossrail underground link across central London and its associated east-west connections to existing lines. Funding for Crossrail was agreed in October 2007 and approval to construct the railway was achieved through an Act of Parliament in July 2008. Crossrail Ltd became a fully-owned subsidiary of Transport for London in December 2008, and from October 1 2020 its governance transferred to TfL.
Crossrail Ltd is responsible for delivering the new railway. Construction commenced at Canary Wharf on May 15, 2009 with tunnelling starting in May 2012 and completing three years later. The railway was originally scheduled to open as the Elizabeth line in December 2018, but delays with commissioning have resulted in opening being postponed until 2021.
