ŽSR was set up in 1993, comprising the Slovak part of the former Czechoslovak State Railways, first line opened 1848.

In 2002 it was separated into an operating company (Železničná Spoločnosť, as) for passenger and freight traffic, and an infrastructure manager ŽSR responsible for the management, operation and maintenance of the railway network and related services. At the beginning of 2005 the reorganisation was completed by splitting the operating company into two companies: passenger services run by Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK), and freight by Železničná spoločnosť Cargo Slovakia (ZSSK Cargo).

ŽSR is a fully government-controlled entity and is responsible especially for administration and operation of the rail network, the provision of rail network services, and construction and maintenance of railways in the Slovak Republic.
