This isolated line linking Tacna in southern Peru with the port of Arica in Chile, opened in 1856, was not privatised with the rest of the state railway Enafer in 1999. Under an agreement with Chile, the line now lies within a Peruvian corridor from the border to Arica, which is a free port zone. It is managed by the Tacna regional government.
