Although plans have existed since 1950 for large-scale railway construction, the only lines link Puerto Cabello to Barquisimeto, with branches from Yaritagua to Acarigua and Morón to Riecito, known as the Simon Bolivar Railway, and the isolated Ezequiel Zamora Railway from Caracas to Cua (opened October 2006).
