Opened 1992; two-line network with 41 stops. See Konya network map.
Konya’s first line opened in 1992, and was extended in 1996 (21·1 km). Line 2 opened September 29, 2015 from the loop at Alaaddin east to Adiye (4·4 km, 6 new stops), including a 1·8 km catenary-free section; further extension planned (12·1 km).
In 2014 Škoda Transportation suppled 60 five-section LRVs to re-equip Line 1 and for planned extensions.
In November 2019 a consortium of China National Machinery, Taşyapı and AYGM won a €1·2bn contract to build a heavy metro line from Necmettin Erbakan University running in a loop around the north of the city via the new high-speed station and then following Fetih Caddesi around the east and south to Meram Belediyesi (21·1 km, 22 stations). A second route would involve reconstruction of the Selçuk Üniversitesi line from light rail to metro.
