The first railway on Kyushu opened in 1889 between Hakata and Chitosegawa. JR Kyushu was created in 1987 when JNR was privatised. It runs 22 routes serving a total of 567 stations.

Kyushu Shinkansen operations between Yatsushiro and Hakata started in Spring 2011, allowing through operation from Shin-Osaka to Kagoshima.

The company was stock-market listed in October 2016.
