A public benefit corporation of the State of New York, MTA was created in 1965 and is responsible for almost all public transport operations in the New York area. See New York network map.
Five subsidiaries operate the city’s bus, metro (MTA New York City Transit and MTA Staten Island Railway), commuter rail (MTA Long Island and MTA Metro-North), and suburban bus systems, while Capital Construction manages major capital and infrastructure projects. MTA also operates seven bridges and two tunnels. Its services carry some 8·5 million passengers daily.
