DfT (Operator of Last Resort Holdings Ltd)

Northern Trains Ltd serves 529 stations of which it manages 477.

Much of its network is provision of services to the specification of the Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Merseytravel and Tyne & Wear passenger transport executives. From April 2016 Northern also provided services from Manchester to Blackpool, Barrow and Windermere transferred from the TransPennine franchise.

Electrification of routes from Liverpool to Manchester and Wigan was completed in 2015, with the Blackpool North line completed in 2018 and Manchester–Bolton–Preston in 2019. Delivery of new rolling stock is underway: CAF is building 281 Cl.195 Civity DMU cars and 141 Cl.331 Civity EMU cars, and Northern is also acquiring eight remodelled four-car Cl.769 Flex bi-mode EMUs. Together these will enable withdrawal of Cl.14x Pacer units, although the deadline for this has been extended.

On April 1 2016 Arriva took over the franchise formerly run by Serco/Abellio consortium under an award until March 31 2025. However, on January 9 2020, the Secretary of State for Transport stated that the franchise is no longer financially viable and will have to be replaced. It came under government control from March 1 2020, and is now managed through DOHL (DfT Operator of Last Resort Holdings Ltd, owned by Department for Transport) as Northern Trains Ltd.
