The railway serves the main rice, rubber, and timber producing areas. It was constructed between 1896 and 1905 by the British North Borneo (Chartered) Company and was transferred to the State of North Borneo (now Sabah) in 1946, becoming Sabah State Railway in 1963. The railway consists of a single 134 km line from Tanjung Aru, near Kota Kinabalu, to Tenom, in the Interior Division.
