TPE serves 58 stations, of which it manages 19, running services between Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Scarborough and Hull via Leeds to Manchester, Manchester Airport and Liverpool, plus Cleethorpes to Sheffield and Manchester, and Glasgow/Edinburgh to Manchester Airport.
Electrification of the Manchester – Newton-le-Willows route saw Glasgow services operated by EMUs from December 2013; these returned to using the direct route via Bolton on completion of electrification in May 2019.
On April 1 2016 First Group began a new franchise term running until March 31 2023 with an optional two-year extension; routes to Blackpool, Barrow and Windermere were transferred to Northern, and former franchise partner Keolis is no longer involved. The award included a new Liverpool – Glasgow via Carlisle service, and extension of Newcastle services to Edinburgh (adding 213 route-km to the TPE network).
Three new fleets have entered service: 19 Nova 1 five-car bi-mode units from Hitachi, 12 Nova 2 five-car EMUs from CAF, and 66 Nova 3 loco-hauled Mk5a coaches from CAF.
On May 11 2021 FirstGroup announced that it had reached agreement with DfT for termination of the franchise. TransPennine Express continues to be operated by FirstGroup under a National Rail Contract running for two years from May 31 2021, with option to extend two years.
