The Swedish Transport Agency was set up by the government on 1 January 2009, combining the functions of a number of government transport agencies. The former Swedish Rail Agency, Järnvägsstyrelsen, is now part of the agency's railway department. It formulates regulations, examines and grants permits, and supervises railway, light rail and underground systems. Its objective is a high level of safety within an efficient but competitive railway market.
