Ferrovia Circumetnea

Opened 1999. Single U-shaped route serving 11 stations. See Catania network map.

See the feature in Metro Report International - Autumn 2018 issue for more details.

The first section of route was built to replace a street-running section of the Ferrovia Circumetnea, with a 3·8 km standard gauge route from Borgo to Centrale FS station and Porto entering service in 1999 (5 stations). On December 20 2016 services were diverted onto a new branch from Galatea to Stesicoro (1·9 km, 2 stations), with the original line and station at Porto mothballed. The line west from Borgo to Nesima opened on March 31 2017 (3·3 km, 4 stations). Continuation from Nesima to Monte Po opened on July 22 2024 (1·3 km, 2 stations).

Extension northwest from Monte Po is planned as far as Misterbianco (2·2 km, 2 stations), with possible later projection to Paternò (11·5 km). An extension from Stesicoro southwest to Palestro is under construction (2·2 km, 3 stations), with later extension to Fontanarossa Airport planned (4·2 km, 5 stations).

A new fleet of 10 two-car trains is being procured from Titagarh Firema, with options covering further batches up to a total of 54 cars.
