INDIA: Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has awarded Titagarh Rail Systems a Rs24·8bn contract to design, supply and maintain 132 metro cars, communication-based train control, telecoms, platform screen doors and depot equipment for the Line 5 project.
The 24·9 km, 16 station elevated Line 5 or Orange Line is being developed in two phases, with Phase 1 to run from Kapurbawdi to Kasheli and Dhamankar Naka and Phase 2 extending this to Bhiwandi and Kalyan APMC.
The driverless metro trainsets for Line 5 will feature stainless-steel bodies for durability and energy efficiency, and a ‘modern, ergonomic design with comfortable interiors’. The contract confirmed on October 31 includes a total of seven years of maintenance.
Manufacturing will be carried out at Titagarh’s Passenger Rail Systems facility in Uttarpara, Kolkata. This site is also producing Sleeper Vande Bharat trains as well as metro cars for Ahmedabad and Surat and for Bengaluru under a manufacturing contract awarded by CRRC Nanjing Puzhen. The factory is being equipped to produce aluminium-bodied trainsets from Q1 2027.
Building on previous orders
The latest order is Titagarh’s second major contract for the Mumbai Metro, following a Rs16.0bn contract awarded by construction contractor NCC in August which covers the supply and seven years of maintenance of 18 six-car trainsets for the 15·6 km fully elevated Line 6 (Pink) under construction between Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli EEH.
Titagarh has also been awarded a Rs4·3bn contract to supply a further 12 three-car trainsets for the Pune Metro.
The manufacturer said the orders strengthen its position ‘as one of India’s foremost contributors to the country’s fast-growing metro ecosystem, underlining its capability to deliver comprehensive, Make in India solutions’.
Vice-Chairman & Managing Director Umesh Chowdhary said ‘we remain committed to driving the nation’s infrastructure growth — not only Make in India and Make for India, but also Make for the World.’
