London Underground Piccadilly Line new Siemens Mobility train impression

UK: Transport for London has appointed Costain to design enhancements to the signalling infrastructure on London Underground’s Piccadilly Line.

Costain will work with TfL’s design team to ensure that the signalling between Heathrow Airport and Barons Court is compatible with both the existing trains and the Siemens Mobility fleet which is due to enter service from 2025.

The contract announced on July 1 has been awarded under TfL’s Professional Services Framework. It includes surveys of around 200 existing signals, with ecological, environmental, ground condition, contamination and structural integrity assessments, identification of buried services, and line level and track clearance assessments.

The design phase will include the use of automated tools and standardised processes to enhance accuracy, effectiveness and productivity.

Costain will also provide technical assurance services during the delivery phase.

Andy Clarke, Director for Integrated Transport at Costain, said ‘we will draw on our in-house design capability and experience of delivering complex projects to help streamline the delivery phase of the works — proactively seeking opportunities to drive efficiencies and save time and money’.
