Semi-automated containerised coke unloader inaugurated

12 Nov 2015

AUSTRIA: A facility for the rapid semi-automatic unloading of coke delivered to Voestalpine’s Leoben/Donawitz site in containers has been inaugurated by the steel maker, technology supplier Innofreight and ÖBB’s freight division Rail Cargo Group.

The RockTainer ORE system of modular steel containers is designed to speed-up unloading, improve safety and reduce noise and dust. The use of separate containers and wagons provides operational flexibility, with the ability to swap damaged containers, while the use of high-strength steel means the containers can be lightweight and thus offer a high payload.

‘This jointly-developed solution will bolster the already close partnership between ÖBB and industry’, said Christian Kern, Chairman of the ÖBB-Holding management board, at the inauguration on November 3. ‘The new logistics system is a tangible example of the railways' ability to develop and innovate. We are staving off de-industrialisation in Europe, securing jobs in Austria, and boosting Steiermark as a place to do business.’
