Alpine motive power orders
SWISS Federal Railways has ordered 59 Type Am843 diesel-hydraulic locomotives from Vossloh Schienenfahrzeugtechnik, with an option for 37 more. For delivery from autumn 2003, they will replace SBB's existing diesel loco fleet at a cost of SFr146m. The four-axle units will have a nominal rating of 1500 kW and a maximum speed of 100 km/h. Exhaust filters will ensure compliance with the latest emissions regulations.
SBB Cargo will take 40 for trip freight, and five will replace locomotives operated by the Passenger business. The other 14 will be owned by the Infrastructure division, for shunting duties in marshalling yards, emergency use on the new Mattstetten - Rothrist line and to haul the Gotthard tunnel rescue train based in Airolo.
Reflecting growing interest in the international freight market, BLS Cargo signed a €30m contract for 10 dual-system Class 485 electric locos with Bombardier Transportation on July 8. Similar to the 10 Class 482 units supplied to SBB (RG 7.02 p350), they are intended to haul traffic in Switzerland and Germany. Delivery is scheduled between December 2002 and July 2003.
Bombardier has also won an order worth €14m from Angel Trains' subsidiary Locomotion Capital for five dual-system Class 185 freight locomotives to be leased to Austrian operators. They will be assembled in Kassel and delivery will take place between November this year and March 2003.
