DART heads north
ANOTHER 5·6 km of light rail line opened in the northeast suburbs of Dallas on May 6, bringing the network to 43·4 km. The Blue line extension from White Rock to LBJ/Skillman runs through White Rock Lake Park on a 1430m bridge. Services run every 15min, and every 10min at peak hours.
Dallas Area Rapid Transit expects to open its seven-station Red Line extension north to Richardson on July 1. This will be followed on November 18 by the rest of the Blue line extension to Garland, and completion of the Red line to Plano on December 9. By the end of this year the Dallas light rail network will total 70·8 km.
With its second phase nearly complete, DART is starting to develop Phase III, which would add another 66route-km by 2010. The ACT21 joint venture of Carter-Burgess, Jacobs Sverdrup, STV Inc. and KAI Alliance has been appointed as general engineering consultant for the expansion of the light rail network and Trinity Railway Express commuter rail services.
Phase III includes lines to Deep Ellum, Fair Park, South Dallas, Pleasant Grove, Love Field Airport, Farmers Branch, Carrollton, North Irving, Las Colinas Urban Center and DFW International Airport. Other projects include expansion of the light rail maintenance depot at Fair Park and construction of a second servicing facility in northwest Dallas.
