DB awards ETCS on-board contract
GERMANY: Deutsche Bahn has awarded a €60m contract to Alstom for the supply and installation of on-board ETCS equipment for 121 high speed trainsets to be used on both international and domestic services.
The order covers 71 ICE-T tilting trainsets and 50 ICE3 sets. Alstom will supply its Atlas on-board equipment, which has already been fitted to17 ICE3 sets used on services from Frankfurt to Brussels via LGV3 in Belgium and to Paris via LGV Est.
Under the deal announced on December 22, Alstom is to manufacture the equipment at its plants in Charleroi and Villeurbanne and work with DB to install the equipment at DB workshops in Hagen, Krefeld and Nürnberg.
The first 17 trainsets are to be equipped by December 2012 for operation into Austria, where ÖBB is installing ETCS Level 2 on the Wien – St Pölten section of the Westbahn main line and the new Unterinntal route east of Innsbruck. Other sets will be fitted with ETCS to operate on DB’s Erfurt – Halle/Leipzig Neubaustrecke from December 2015, and on services into Switzerland from December 2016.
As well as DB’s ICE3 international sets, Alstom has already supplied Atlas on-train ETCS equipment for 468 locomotives and driving cars in the SBB fleet since July 2006. In January 2010 the company won an order from ÖBB to equip 449 vehicles for use on the Westbahn and Unterinntal routes.
