AN EMSAT track recording car supplied by Plasser & Theurer has been deployed on German Railway’s high speed network to measure long-wave faults in height and alignment on plain track and switches. Equipped with three measuring axles, the EMSAT has an average output of 2·5 km/h and takes measurements every 200mm. Data is transmitted to a tamper by radio or on disc, and when equipped with an eight-channel recorder the EMSAT can be used for track acceptance measurement.
In addition to measuring displacement and lifting values to within less than 1mm, the car can also measure superelevation and track gauge faults. When fitted with GPS, the EMSAT is able to undertake complete track geometry measurement in one operation without the need for reference points, with significant cost savings over manual surveying.
