Romanian wagon builder Remar Pascani is to lay off 710 of its 2400 staff by the end of the year. The company is currently working at 70% of its capacity, with orders until March next year.
In 2001-02 India's Rail Coach Factory at Kapurthala in Punjab produced 1204 carriages, including double-deck vehicles, and 291 with roof-mounted air-conditioning. The company's prototype metre gauge 100 km/h bogie has been successfully tested by the Railway Designs & Standards Organisation at Lucknow.
Norfolk Southern's locomotive maintenance subsidiary Thoroughbred Mechanical Services has signed an agreement with General Motors EMD to modify the bodies and frames of 46 DM30AC and DE30AC locos for the Long Island Rail Road. The work will be done at Norfolk Southern's Juniata works in Altoona, Pennsylvania. According to TMS, the first loco is expected to be completed in October.
