Information and control

01 Feb 2004

TWO contracts have been awarded for station management and passenger information computer systems for use in London.

Transmitton is to supply a real-time passenger information system for the interim London St Pancras station, which will be used by Midland Main Line trains during the refurbishment and major redesign of the historic terminus in readiness for the opening of Channel Tunnel Rail Link Section 2 in 2007.

The information system will be purpose-built by Transmitton, and will be capable of being expanded into a fully integrated station control network. It will be able to interface with different train describers used on the CTRL and the Midland Main Line, allowing the gathering and use of real-time information covering trains to and from the Channel Tunnel and south of Leicester.

In addition it will also be able to integrate subsystems including passenger help points, information displays, public address, CCTV, staff radio and telephone communications, lifts, heating, and lighting management.

A contract worth £11·7m to supply station management computer networks for 147 London Underground stations has been awarded to Thales Information Systems by Atkins Rail as part of the Metronet public-private partnership consortium.

The computers will integrate the monitoring and control of station help points, CCTV, lifts and escalators with the passenger information, public address and safety networks. The first station is to be equipped in March 2005.
