Istanbul tunnel and metro contracts to be signed
TURKEY: The Railway, Port & Airport Construction Directorate was expected to sign a contract with Eurasia Joint Venture by the end of October, covering consultancy and engineering services for the Marmaray Bosporus rail crossing.
Preparation of tender documents for the construction work is expected to take eight months, and construction four years. The project involves a 13·3 km tunnel, including 1·8 km of submerged tube, and five underground stations. It also encompasses rehabilitation of the 63 km Gebze - Haydarpasa and Sirkeci - Halkali commuter lines and reconstruction of 37 stations.
- An Alstom-led consortium has been awarded a €39m contract by the Municipality of Istanbul for electrical and mechanical work on the 1·8 km Sishane metro extension, including power supplies, communications, signalling and train control. Work was expected to begin in October, for opening in January 2003. The E&M contract for the 3·7 km Sishane - Yenikapi section crossing the Golden Horn was due to be awarded by the end of October.
