La Robla reopening closer
SPANISH metre gauge operator FEVE has started work on the last phase of a programme to reopen the whole of its León - Bilbao route to passenger traffic. Under a €12·87m contract expected to take 11 months to complete, Tecsa is relaying the 42 km between Cordovilla and Arija with 54 kg/m rail on timber sleepers and stone ballast. Remodelling will also be undertaken at Mataporquera and Los Carabeos.
Passenger services between León and Bercedo-Montija were suspended in 1991 due to poor track quality, and currently operate between León and Guardo at the western end with funding support from the Castilla y León regional government. When the route reopens throughout next year, FEVE hopes to operate its El Transcant
