Australia: NSW passenger operator City Rail has selected Goninan to supply 13 DMUs for its Hunter Valley services.
France: The first Z-TER EMU was formally handed over to SNCF by Alstom Transport at its Bellevue test track in La Rochelle on October 4. Alstom has awarded Bombardier a €6m contract to supply six trailer cars and 12 bogies for the next build of Z-TERs.
Germany: DB's Cottbus works and Kiepe Elektrik have won a contract to modernise 53 Type EL2 Bo-Bo mining locomotives for Lausitzer Braunkohle AG of Seftenberg. Work includes fitting radio control and IGBT chopper controls to the 2·4 kV DC traction equipment.
Mindener Kreisbahn has ordered a Type DE-AC33C Blue Tiger diesel loco from Bombardier Transportation at a cost of €3m for delivery in May 2003.
Mitron and Omega Electronics are to supply DB with 60 LCD screens for passenger information displays at stations by the end of this year.
Italy: Italferr has awarded Bombardier and Ansaldo a €17m contract to supply control and communications for the Messina - Patti line by the end of 2005.
Korea: To facilitate rebuilding of the cross-border railway, South Korea is to provide North Korea with materials and equipment with credit over 20 years, at 1% interest with 10 years' grace.
Lithuania: LG plans to invest 400m litas to modernise its fleet of 150 Soviet-era locos. Bids have been invited to renovate 29 locos for around €11m. Tenders will be called this year for up to 40 new locos, and 43 carriages are to be modernised.
Poland: Systra of France has won a technical assistance contract to advise Gdansk municipality and operator ZKM on new rolling stock and track renewals.
Slovakia: Alcatel has signed a €35m deal for the 16-month second phase of a three-part €74m project to update ZSR's telecommunications infrastructure.
Spain: Alstom, AnsaldoBreda, Bombardier, CAF and Siemens have submitted prequalification bids to supply 80 commuter EMUs to Renfe (RG 8.02 p400). The tender for 44 gauge-changing power cars attracted bids from CAF, Siemens and a consortium of Talgo and Bombardier.
Alstom Transport's Albuixech plant has delivered the first two of 32 Class 333 diesel locomotives being rebuilt for Renfe's Freight and Intermodal business units under a contract worth €48m. Fitted with EM2000 electronic engine control, the Class 333.300 has 10% more tractive effort and 30% more adhesion.
Tenders are to be called for the provision of a tracklaying base at Olmedo on the Madrid - Valladolid high speed line, as well as five ballast distribution sites between Segovia and Valladolid. Work is expected to take five months to complete within a budget of €14·85m.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is to supply two 10m diameter tunnel boring machines for work on the Córdoba - Malaga high speed line.
United Kingdom: Eurotunnel has awarded Bombardier and Brush Traction a €157m contract for the modernisation of 37 shuttle locomotives by April 2009, upgrading them from 5·6MW to 7MW.
USA: Holland America line has ordered four 27·1m Colorado Railcar panoramic dome cars at a cost of $3m each to run on Alaska tourist services next spring.
Connecticut Department of Transportation has selected Wilbur Smith Associates to plan the upgrading of the 100 km New Haven - Hartford - Springfield route for commuter services.
