ON JUNE 22 Netherlands Railways President Rob den Besten and German Railway Chairman Dr Johannes Ludewig signed an agreement in Frankfurt which seals the merger of the two railways’ freight businesses, DB Cargo and NS Cargo. German Transport Minister Franz Münterfering was present, as were DB Cargo chief Dr Eberhard Sinnecker and his Dutch counterpart Ed Smulders. The two railways also announced details of plans to intensify co-operation with international passenger services.

DB’s five main subsidiaries, DB Cargo AG, DB Netz AG, DB Regio AG, DB Reise & Touristik AG and DB Station & Service AG, were granted the legal status of independent companies on June 1. DB AG retains 100% ownership.

  • Adtranz has developed a freight DMU called the Cargoroo Sprinter useing the power modules of the GTW2/6 diesel railcar. The company won an order in May from Romanian State Railways for 60 low-floor rolling highway wagons, each with 10 axles.
