Spoornet goes road-rail
ROAD-RAIL specialist Zagro and Nissan Diesel are supplying a fleet of 220 road-rail vehicles to Viamax Fleet Solutions (RG 9.01 p567). To be delivered by 2004, the vehicles will be leased by the infrastructure maintenance division of South African rail operator Spoornet.
Zagro is supplying conversion kits for the Nissan Diesel UD60 6-tonne commercial vehicles, which are being built at Nissan SA's Rosslyn plant. Integrated hydraulics are used to position the rail wheels, and to operate a 3·3m crane and power tools. An all-hydraulic system was adopted so no additional power plant would be required. Maximum speed in the rail mode is 60 km/h.
