Subte car order placed

01 Oct 1999

BUENOS AIRES metro concessionaire Metrovías has ordered 16 five-car EMUs from Alstom Transport to re-equip Line A between Plaza de Mayo and Primera Junta. The deal is valued at 186m euros, and the first deliveries are due 18 months after the contract has been signed.

The stainless steel cars are to be built by Alstom's Brazilian subsidiary in São Paulo. They will be equipped with Onix traction drives and microprocessor controls including fault diagnostics and automatic speed supervision. Comprehensive passenger information systems are to be provided. Each train will accommodate up to 825 passengers.

They will be the first new vehicles ordered for the Subte network in almost 20 years. Since taking over the concession in 1994 Metrovías has purchased 140 second-hand metro cars from Japan to re-equip Lines B and D, but many vehicles dating from the 1930s and 1940s remain in traffic.
