TENDERS will be called later this year for a 16·7 km light rail line on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Costing €178m, the 12·5 km first phase will link Intercambiador in central Santa Cruz to La Laguna. An extension to the airport and a branch from Hospital Universitario to La Cuesta will follow.
Work is expected to get underway early next year, for opening in 2005. The full project is expected to cost €240m, including land acquisition, rolling stock and the depot. The Tenerife and Canary Islands authorities are financing the project, with a credit from the European Investment Bank and a private partner.
The fully-segregated double track line will have 28 stops, and priority at road crossings. There will be 22 low-floor cars each carrying around 200 passengers. All axles will be motored as the average gradient is 4·4%. The line will be operated by Metropolitano de Tenerife, carrying 45000 passengers each weekday. n
