PKP Cargo orders Vectron locomotives for north–south corridor

28 Jan 2019

POLAND: PKP Cargo signed a firm order for five Siemens Vectron multisystem locomotives on January 28. The deal is worth €26m, including maintenance, and has been placed using an option on a September 2015 order for 15 Vectrons.

Delivery of the latest batch of 6·4 MW locomotives with a maximum speed of 160 km/h is scheduled to start in the middle of the year. They are intended for use on north–south freight services, and will be equipped with ETCS as well as national train control systems for use in Poland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary.

This forms part of PKP Cargo’s aim to become a leading operator in the ‘Three Seas’ group of 12 EU countries between the Baltic, Adriatic and Black Sea, said President of PKP Cargo Czesław Warsewicz. ‘This purchase is also a response to the needs of the market and dynamically growing intermodal transport, whose annual percentage growth in the last few years has always been two-digit’, he added.

Siemens Mobility has now won orders to supply around 800 Vectrons to 41 operators, including 44 for use in Poland by PKP Cargo, DB Cargo Polska and Lotos Kolej.
