A southern extension of Wien metro Line U1 opened on September 2.

AUSTRIA: Chancellor Christian Kern, Wien Mayor Michael Häupl and Executive City Councillor for the Environment Ulli Sima attended a ceremony on September 2 to open an extension of Wien metro Line U1.

The 4·6 km southern extension from Reumannplatz to Oberlaa adds five stations and brings Line U1 to 19·2 km, making it the longest metro line in the city. It offers a 15 min journey time between Oberlaa and the city centre, around half that by road. Construction started in 2012 and cost €600m.
