A groundbreaking ceremony on April 29 marked the start of work on an extension of Karlsruhe tram Route 2 to Knielingen Nord.

GERMANY: A groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the future Egon-Eiermann-Allee stop marked the start of work on a tram extension in Karlsruhe on April 29.

The 1·5 km extension of Route 2 running north from the current Lassallestraße terminus would serve the Knielingen 2.0 residential district. It would terminate at Knielingen Nord, with intermediate stops at Sudetenstraße, Pionierstraße and Egon-Eiermann-Allee.

Due to open by the end of 2020, the extension is expected to cost €14m to build, of which €6·1m is coming from the Land of Baden-Württemberg’s central government allocation.
