MTR operates a network serving Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. High speed connections between Hong Kong International Airport and the city centre are provided by the dedicated Airport Express, while a light rail network serves the Northwest New Territories (12 routes, 68 stops).

The 2⋅6 km extension of the Kwun Tong Line to Ho Man Tin and Whampoa in Kowloon opened on October 23 2016, with the new South Island Line from Admiralty to South Horizons (7 km, 4 stations) opened on December 28 2016. The first section of the Sha Tin – Central link, from Tai Wai to Kai Tak, opened on February 14 2020 (6·8 km, 3 stations), with the Kai Tak – Hung Hom link opened on June 27 2021 (3·8 km, 3 intermediate stations). As a result the Ma On Shan and West Rail lines are now operated as a the Tuen Ma line, running through between Tuen Mun and Wu Kai Sha. The remaining aspect of the project was completed on May 15 2022 with extension of East Rail services south from Hung Hom to Admiralty through a new Victoria Harbour tunnel.

MTR also operates inter-city services to mainland China. Through joint venture or subsidiary companies, MTR also operates routes in Beijing, Hangzhou and Shenzhen, as well as rail networks in London, Melbourne and Stockholm.
