INDIA: Chennai Metro Rail Corp has awarded major contracts for Phase II construction works.

L&T Construction has been awarded two packages, which it said it won against stiff competition from domestic and international construction companies.

The first covers the construction of 12 km of twin-bore tunnels from Kellys station to Taramani Road Junction as part of Corridor 3, including station box diaphragm walls and entrance and exit structures at Chetpet, Royapettah Government Hospital, Thiruvanmiyur and Greenways Road stations. Construction will involve eight tunnel boring machines and is scheduled to take 52 months.

L&T’s other contract covers 8 km of viaduct with nine elevated stations between Power House and Porur Junction on Corridor 4. This is to be completed in 36 months and includes 4 km of double deck viaduct, with both decks to be used by the metro, which L&T said would the first of its kind in India.

Tata Projects has been awarded the contract for 9 km of twin-bore tunnel between Venugopal Nagar and Kellys on Corridor 3, along with the construction of station box diaphragm walls entry/exit structures at Madhavaram Milk colony, Murari Hospital, Ayanavaram and Purasaiwakkam High Road.
