Three new light rail lines are being developed to the north, west and east of central Lisboa.

PORTUGAL: The national government, municipality and operator Metropolitano de Lisboa have signed the contracts to fund the southwestern extension of the metro Red Line from São Sebastião to Alcântara, as well as the planned Odivelas/Loures light rail corridor.

Worth a total of €554m, the projects are being fully funded from the EU’s Recovery & Resilience Plan, under which work must be concluded by December 31 2025.

With an estimated cost of €304m, the Red Line extension will extend the route by 4 km, adding stations at Amoreiras, Campo de Ourique, Infante Santo and Alcântara. The final station would provide an interchange with the future LIOS Ocidental light rail line to Oeiras, as well as the existing tram Route 15.

Meanwhile, the 12 km Loures/Odivelas light rail line in the north of the city would link Hospital Beatriz Ângelo with João Villaret serving 18 stops, including an interchange with the Yellow Line of the metro at Odivelas. It is expected to be completed within a budget of €250m.

  • Metropolitano de Lisboa reopened Arroios station on the Green Line in mid-September after a four-year refurbishment programme to enable it to handle six-car trainsets and to provide full step-free access. The work cost €6∙67m and was undertaken by a consortium of DST, Efacec and DTE/Cari.
