CHILE: President Michelle Bachelet visited the site of the future Estadio Nacional station on Line 6 of the Santiago metro on May 23, to announce the signature of two agreements that will see the network take 60% of its power requirements from renewable sources.

Over a 15-year term, 42% of energy requirements are to be provided by the El Pelicano solar power station, while 18% is to be generated by the wind farm at San Juan. Both are due to be in full production from 2018, representing an investment by the government of US$500m.

The new agreements are expected to reduce Chile’s CO2 emissions by 130 000 tonnes a year. Bachelet said that passengers on Line 6 would be able to travel on a mode that ‘cares for the planet, reduces our carbon footprint and makes a sustainable future possible for all’.
