USA: San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency has awarded Cubic Transportation Systems a contract to supply a real-time passenger information system for the Muni light rail and bus network.

This will include upgraded software for more accurate prediction of vehicle arrival times, multimedia LCD signs at rail platforms and bus stops, and on-board digital signage.

The enhanced system will provide passengers with additional functionality including map views of vehicle locations, transfer connection predictions, directions to alternative routes, estimates of vehicle occupancy, and updated information about diversions, delays and service interruptions.

An updated MuniMobile app will allow users to ‘look, book and pay’ in one process, while an analytics platform will help SFMTA make better informed decisions for operational planning, performance management, customer engagement and passenger experience.

‘Not only does Cubic’s system provide insights necessary for service awareness and responsive planning, it also offers features especially critical for Covid-19 recovery, such as vehicle occupancy levels to encourage social distancing and real-time information to reduce wait and travel time’, said Jeff Lowinger, President of Cubic Transportation Systems. ‘A better-informed traveller is a less-stressed traveller – we will provide real-time information in a multi-channel environment right to the traveller’s smartphone and modern digital signage.’
