ROMANIA: Tatra-Yug has won a 170m lei contract to supply 17 low-floor trams to Craiova, beating bids from Polish company Pesa and Turkey’s Durmazlar and Bozankaya.

Tatra-Yug’s bid of 136m lei was adjudged best value, with other offers coming in at 147m lei (Bozankaya), 156m lei (Pesa) and 166m lei (Durmazlar).

This is the Ukrainian manufacturer’s second export order, following a 2017 contract to supply 15 high-floor trams to Alexandria in Egypt.

The order is being financed by Romania’s Ministry of Regional Development & Public Works and the EU Regional Operational Programme.

The 25 m long vehicles will be built to a new design, and the company expects to unveil a prototype later this year.

Since 1998 Craiova has acquired second-hand trams from Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, München and Rotterdam to operate its single 16·7 km tram line.

Following the award of the contract, Bozankaya lodged an appeal with CNSC, a quasi-judicial body for resolving complaints in public sector procurement. A ruling is expected within six weeks.
