CANADA: The government of Ontario has agreed to provide C$180m to support the purchase of 60 additional streetcars for Toronto Transit Commission. The funding will be matched by the federal government, with the City of Toronto providing an additional C$208m.

The trams are to be produced at Alstom’s ex-Bombardier site in Thunder Bay for delivery from 2023. The programme also includes work to expand TTC’s Hillcrest depot to accommodate the new cars.

The funding announced on May 12 vehicles will ensure that TTC can address immediate fleet needs and match capacity to customer demand, This will enable 50 buses that are currently supplementing tram services to be returned to operation on local bus routes.

  • Transport agency Metrolinx will continue discussions with Alstom regarding an extension of an existing contract for the refurbishment of BiLevel commuter rail coaches used on GO Rail services.
