‘Y’-shaped metro network serving 19 stations, plus light rail line serving 37 stops; both opened 2011. See Alger network map.

Metro construction started 1989; initial section (9·5 km, 10 stations) opened in November 2011, with extension east to El Harrach on July 5, 2015 (4·0 km, 4 stations). The northern extension to Place des Martyrs (1·7 km) and a southern branch to Aïn Naâdja (3·6 km) opened on April 9, 2018; three intermediate stations opened during 2018.

Extension of the line from El Harrach to the airport is under construction (9·5 km, 10 stations), with opening expected in 2022. The Aïn Naâdja branch is also being extended to Baraki by the end of 2021 (6 km, 6 stops).

The initial section of light rail line was opened in 2011 and extended in 2012, 2014 and 2015.

EMA is also the development authority for tramways under construction in Oran, Ouargla and Constantine (qqv).
