First tramway opened 1896. Network now comprises 11 ‘Stadtbahn’ light rail routes via one of the two cross-city tunnels, and 7 conventional street tram lines with some segregated track. See both Düsseldorf city network map and Rhein-Ruhr regional network map.
The first tunnel section opened in 1981, with the main cross-city tunnel following in 1988 (6 km, 11 stops). The Wehrhahn line opened on February 20 2016; running from Wehrhahn to Bilk it provides a second cross-city tram tunnel (3·4 km, 6 stops). A 1·8 km, 3-stop tram extension from Rath to Am Hülserhof for the ISS Dome opened on January 7 2018.
Route U76 runs northwest providing a through service to the neighbouring city of Krefeld (operator SWK Mobil GmbH), with line U79 running north to connect to the Duisburg network of Duisburger Verkehrsgesellschaft AG (DVG).
Rheinbahn and Köln transport operator KVB placed a joint order for LRVs with Bombardier in March 2015; 42 Flexity units were due to be delivered 2017-20 to Rheinbahn, with an oprion for 16 more.
