UK: Luxury travel brand Belmond is to launch its Britannic Explorer sleeper cruise train shortly, offering three-day itineraries from London to Wales, Cornwall and the Lake District. A fourth itinerary is planned for 2026.
The train will be hauled by GB Railfreight, which began hauling trains for Belmond in 2015, including the Royal Scotsman, which carries up to 36 guests on two, three and four night routes through the Scottish Highlands.
As part of Belmond’s commitment to reduce its carbon footprint, it has been agreed that both the Britannic Explorer and Royal Scotsman services will switch from Class 66 diesel locos to Stadler Class 99 electro-diesels in 2027.

The Britannic Explorer is intended to blend ‘timeless rail heritage with contemporary British gastronomy, culture and style.’ The 18 cabins styled by Albion Nord have ‘classic British design’, including three Grand Suites with double beds, personal butler service and ensuite bathrooms. There is an onboard spa and gourmet meals by chef Simon Rogan, and trips will included optional off-train guided excursions.
Fares start at £11 000 for two passengers. The services is due to start in July, although the first trip was cancelled.

‘Belmond are delighted to be launching the Britannic Explorer, England and Wales’ first luxury sleeper’, said Gary Franklin, Senior Vice-President, Trains & Cruises at the luxury travel operator, on July 4. ‘To be working with GB Railfreight, who have worked tirelessly with us to deliver exciting new itineraries to parts of England and Wales sometimes hard to reach, shows the strength of the partnership between the two companies.’
