First-in-class

UK: Govia Thameslink Railway has sent its first Class 387/1 EMU to be fitted with ETCS in-cab signalling as part of the East Coast Digital Programme.

Alstom will install the Atlas 3 ETCS in Worksop, including a new driver’s dashboard, AWS/TPWS, doppler radar and ETCS antennae beneath the soleplate, a European Vital Computer, software for a new train control monitoring system and onboard ETCS software.

Static testing will be undertaken at Litchurch Lane in Derby prior to dynamic testing at Network Rail’s RIDC Melton test track.

The ‘first-in-class’ EMU is set to return in July 2023, after which GTR will fit the remaining 28 Class 387/1 units at its Hornsey depot.
