UK: KH Engineering Services has completed an ‘extensive’ programme of mechanical and electrical design works for two platform extensions at Sandwich station, acting on behalf of principal contractor BAM Nuttall.

The 80 m platform extensions at the Dover end will enable the station to accommodate 12-car trains during The 149th Open which is taking place at Royal St George’s Golf Club in July 2021.

The work by M Group Services subsidiary KHES included the provision of main switchgear within the new feeder pillar to Platform 1; installation of distribution boards; sub-main cabling from existing to new low-voltage distribution systems; installation of new lighting and emergency lighting, with the removal of the previous system; providing a new walkway and column lighting, and LED handrails for a new footbridge.

‘Electrical innovation has allowed for the new installation to be remotely controlled, eliminating possible disruption to passengers, preserving the original exterior of the station, reducing energy costs and controlling lighting levels in consideration of the local community’, said KHES Project Manager Tony Mace.
