UK: Highland Council’s planning committee has unanimously approved proposals to build a station at Inverness Airport on the Aberdeen – Inverness line.

Located approximately 12 km northeast of the city, where the railway runs along the side of the airport, the station will have two platforms, and a passing loop for the single-track line. Parking will be provided for 64 cars including 10 electric charging facilities and four disabled spaces plus cycle parking. The level crossing at Petty to the west of the airport will be closed.

Network Rail said it was now working with contractors and local stakeholders to develop a construction programme lasting around 18 months. The completion date will depend on how quickly the infrastructure manager can mobilise, and will be confirmed at a later stage.

‘The Scottish government has committed around £14m towards this key new station and this is another significant step towards delivery of this important project’, said Minister for Transport Graeme Dey. ‘By providing this kind of sustainable travel interchange, we can bring real benefits to the region by making Inverness Airport more accessible for passengers and staff alike. It will also deliver sustainable travel links to the growing Inverness Airport Business Park and the new town of Tornagrain.’
