Shooter was Managing Director of Chiltern Railways from 1994 until 2011, and diesel multiple-unit 168 001, the first Class 168 ordered by Chiltern Railways in 1997, was named ‘Adrian Shooter CBE’ on the occasion.

Former Secretary of State for Transport Lord Patrick McLoughlin described Shooter as ‘the legend of Chiltern Railways’.

Rob Brighouse, Managing Director of Chiltern Railways in 2011-15, related how Shooter instilled self-belief in his staff and ‘spoke truth to power’. ‘You were results-focused and were never afraid to call it out’, he told Shooter.

Steve Murphy, Managing Director of Chiltern Railways in 1999-2004 and now CEO of MTR UK, noted that passenger traffic on the route had more than trebled since the business was first established and paid tribute to Shooter’s ‘inspirational leadership’.

Shooter, who has motor neurone disease, said ‘all I have ever done is create a vision and employ the best people’.
