UK: Formerly Chair of the House of Commons Transport Select Committee, Huw Merriman MP has been appointed as a minister of state at the Department for Transport responsible for Rail & HS2 in the government of incoming Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

MP for Battle in Sussex, Merriman has been a member of the transport committee since 2015 and succeeded Lilian Greenwood as Chair in 2020.

Responding to Merriman’s appointment, Railway Industry Association Chief Executive Darren Caplan said, ‘we welcome Huw Merriman to his new role as Minister for Rail & HS2. The minister was a respected and accessible Transport Select Committee Chair previously, and he will bring a huge amount of knowledge and experience to the role. He takes on this ministerial position at a challenging time and we wish him well in the weeks and months ahead.’
