UK: Magnetic stripe ticket manufacturer Paragon ID says it has reduced the environmental impact of production by 87% by switching from a solvent-based process to a water-based one.

This follows a two-year project in partnership with the Rail Delivery Group and investment of £230 000.

A total of 11 000 tickets were tested for durability and compatibility with ticket machine manufacturers and train operators including Fast Rail Tickets, Flowbird, LNER and Hull Trains.

Paragon ID says the process reduces solvent emissions by 69 tonnes per year. It adds that there is still demand for 500 million paper tickets per year in the UK, and it is also looking to offer the process in the export market.
