UK: Government funding has been confirmed for planned stations at Wellington and Cullompton in the southwest and at Haxby near York.

The two stations either side of Tiverton Parkway are intended to unlocking significant housing developments and support travel into Exeter.

Network Rail’s Western Route Director Marcus Jones said ’improved rail links connect people with job and leisure opportunities that support local economies, and we look forward to bringing the railway closer to communities that haven’t had easy access to train journeys for more than 60 years’.

The £24m station at Haxby on the York to Scarborough line will bringing an additional 20 000 people within 3 km of the railway, and support prospective development of 3 155 homes.

‘Haxby hasn’t had a station since the 1930s and bringing one back has the potential to be an economic game changer for the north of our city and other places on this important line, like Scarborough’, said City of York Council leader Claire Douglas when funding was confirmed on July 8. ‘With more homes being built across the city, this station is needed more than ever. It will take some pressure off the Outer Ring Road and reduce car journeys from the area into the city centre, helping to ease congestion on our roads.’
