UK: Platform validators are now live in the latest milestone in Translink NI Railways’ Future Ticketing System programme.
Passengers present a smartcard to the card reader or paper or mobile barcode ticket to the barcode scanner, and see a green tick on the screen if the ticket is valid or a red X if invalid.
Staffed stations feature PVs with both smartcard and barcode readers. Unstaffed stations only feature PVs with smartcard readers, and anyone with a paper or mobile barcode ticket will still need their ticket validated onboard the train.
‘This important ”go-live” milestone across our rail network follows a successful pilot at selected stations where we saw customers quickly adapt, finding the validators straight-forward and hassle-free’, Translink said on March 9. ‘The use of customer platform validators is well established across other rail operators, as well as across our Glider [bus] network, and we hope it quickly becomes part of regular travel habits across our rail network.’
Holders of concessionary Smartpasses should continue to get a paper ticket from a vending machine.
