UK: Dave Calfe has been elected as General Secretary of train drivers’ union ASLEF, succeeding Mick Whelan who is stepping down after being in the role since 2011

‘I look forward to representing our union in the years ahead — working for, and in the best interests of, all our members across every sector — and building upon the great work that our current General Secretary has done’, Calfe said on November 6.

Whelan said ‘Dave has been ASLEF’s Executive Committee President for the last seven years, during which time it’s been my pleasure to work with him. I know what a formidable representative he is for our grade and I know that this great union will continue to advocate tirelessly for train drivers under his leadership. Together we will go from strength to strength.

‘My time as GS is drawing to a close and there will be a transitional process to ensure the handover in leadership happens as smoothly as possible. I would like to congratulate both candidates on the comradely, positive, and respectful way in which they conducted this campaign.’

The Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers & Firemen said 96% of the train drivers in Great Britain are members, and it has 22 667 active members and another 2 948 in its retired members’ section.
